Proud to be a Girl
A program that advances girls’ education, public health, gender equality, and access to hygiene — all at once!
In Kenya, poverty is particularly concentrated in rural areas, therefore many people lack access to basic needs. In a country where about 36% of the population lives below the poverty line (less than 1,90 USD/day), menstrual protection is not a priority.
Yet, when we know that a woman has an average of 450 menstrual cycles in her life, it is worth looking into the problem, isn’t it?
Without menstrual protection, young girls are absent from school for almost the entire duration of their periods. Very often, menstruation goes along with school drop out. This impacts their education, their chances of empowerment and widens inequalities.
This program is a holistic menstrual management approach ensuring girls have access to all they need during their periods:
Menstrual Health & Hygiene Education
Education sessions that bring body awareness, confidence, dignity, better hygiene, and fewer school absences, reducing taboos, and raising more empathy and respect. Together, girls and boys help build a safer, more equal, and more caring school where menstruation is no longer an obstacle to education.
Products
Washable and reusable menstrual protection and underwear: every year we provide AFRIpads brand underwear and sanitary pads, made in Uganda and distributed in Kenya. These protections have a lifespan of approximately 18 months.
Sanitary Facilities
- Toilets dedicated to girls, including accessible areas for disabled students.
- Hand‑washing areas
- Private spaces where girls can change their pads or their cloths and take some rest in case of menstrual pain.
